Unidentified perpetrators have again vandalized the memorial in Kurapaty, the site of mass graves where the victims of the Soviet executions were buried, a student who visited Kurapaty this morning told the European Radio for Belarus.
"It looks like a large scale act of vandalizm, something that has not happened for a long time. The huge cross "To Martyrs of Belarus", which stands at the entrance to the site, has been brought down. The inscription board has been removed from the stone. Yet another cross has been danaged," the student said. It appears that the vandals visited the site on Sunday. On Saturday, people were cleaning up the area and the cross were not damaged.

U.S.-EU Joint Statement on Recent Vandalism at Kurapaty (November 30, 2005)

The United States of America and the European Union deplore the recent willful damage to the Kurapaty memorial complex. Unknown vandals carved a swastika onto a religious icon, knocked over or damaged at least a dozen crosses, and once again defaced the bench President Clinton dedicated in 1994. These crosses and the bench were placed in commemoration of the tens of thousands of innocent Belarusian victims of NKVD terror who were murdered at Kurapaty. Vandalizing these memorials dishonors the memory of those victims, and disrespects the Belarusian people as a whole.

A monument to Stalinism victims has been raised in the forest of Kurapaty in the outskirts of Minsk. A candidate of history Ihar Kuznyatsou has informed about it.
According to him, the memorial is a former foundation stone. The text on the metallic plate that disappeared in autumn 2005 and was restored by the public this autumn says that a monument to victims of Stalins repressions of 1937-1940 will be erected there according to the regulation of the BSSR Soviet of Ministers of January 18, 1989.
